This database is the first large scale survey regarding the public lantern lantern phenomenon in the Netherlands between 1880 and 1940. It was compiled from information gathered from newspaper advertisements (such as the one above) published in the Netherlands between 1880 and 1926. This time frame reflects the period of a growing trend in newspaper hits for the search term “met lichtbeelden” (with lantern slides). From 1927 to 1940 the number of hits stabilizes and gradually decreases. This second time period, 1927-1940, was surveyed for a control sample (which can also be found in the database).
