The lantern and the audience: instruction and attraction.

In this paper I examine the changing role of the lantern in illustrated public lectures in the Netherlands, from its emergence in the late nineteenth century through its institutionalization as a common, accepted and expected practice in the late 1920s. I do so by analyzing archival material in the form of testimonies, proposals, commentaries, procedures, polemics, reactions, and reports of historical stakeholders’ engagement with the lantern.
